Runescape developer Jagex's publishing unit has picked up a promising independent game under it's Jagex Partners brand, making Melvor Idle an indie now OSRS Gold. The idler game, which is similar to games like Clicker Heroes or Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms, was launched on Steam in the year before and sports its influences from Jagex's flagship Runescape with pride.
Melvor Idle is a detailed multi-track idler that attempts to redefine "the core components of the RuneScape franchise in a manner so that they can be enjoyed casually," says the publisher. It's a surprisingly feature-rich idle game, one that has a lot of options to design and grow, aswell as an emphasis on zero high-end mechanics that require a restart.
Jagex was reportedly aware of the game in the early part of 2020. A large percentage of their employees liked it before its first Steam launch in the month of October the year. As it is obvious that the game's creator is content to work with the developers of one of their top games. "Being being able to work directly with Jagex directly on this project has been a dream of a lifetime," said Brendan Malcolm, the solo creator of Melvor Idle Studio Games by Malcs.
Malcolm posted a lengthy Q&A to the game's Reddit community, stressing that he'd maintain full creative control as the game progresses and that the game's single-purchase model of monetization will not change. Jagex, he said, had "no intention" to change anything about Melvor Idle. The agreement for publishing will have Jagex handle the marketing, localisation tech support, localisation, and QA for Melvor Idle.
You can try out Melvor Idle for free on the official website and buy it on Steam. I've had it open while writing this story and I'm already adept at cutting down trees.
